The Best North Georgia Picnic – Picnics in the North Georgia Mountains at Beechwood Inn
During the summer trying to snag the perfect seat at a nice lake-side or river-side restaurant can be a challenge. Have I mentioned that I hate crowds? So why even try? Instead pack a picnic lunch and find your perfect spot next to a stream, lake, on a mountain top, or even better yet at one of our local vineyards in Rabun County located in the North Georgia Mountains. The North Georgia Mountains offer hundreds of great locations for picnics – right here in Clayton our own Warwoman Dell was named the “Best Picnic Spot in Georgia” by “Southern Living Magazine. http://www.southernliving.com/travel/south-east/10-north-georgia-surprises
Packing a picnic basket with home-made goodies is great – but there are some of us that want to just grab the dog, jump in the car and pack it to the North Georgia Mountains on the spur of the moment. No time for prep, let’s go. With all the great food retailers and some of our favorite inn’s and restaurants’ house-made products, you can take fine summer dining anywhere. No lines, no reservations, no hassle—just pick the place and set out your spread.
My ‘getting some’ picnic is all about the snacks. A picnic must involve some variety, otherwise you’re just eating sandwiches on a bench. I like the deli section of better grocery stores for olives, pickles, peppers, artichokes, cherry tomatoes—basically just build an antipasti at the olive bar. Pair that with a couple strong cheeses like Point Reyes Blue Cheese and aged Manchego. Oh, and some hard salami, crusty sour dough, a jar of stone-ground mustard, and a couple apples. Okay, I’m ready to go on a picnic to the North Georgia Mountains.
As far as meat, smoked salmon or barbeque pork are our favorites. They are strong, flavorful, and you don’t have to really keep them cold (they’re cured). Or get a rotisserie chicken, some olive oil, and a lemon, and grab a couple salt and pepper packets from the deli condiment section. Pull and dress your chicken as needed, and make and feed your partner little bites. But we also need a sparkling rosé, a couple Solo cups, or maybe a six-pack of icy-cold Terrapin Beer.
I recall picnics as a youth. It was all about my Mother’s fried chicken. She would spend the day before frying chicken and making mustard potato salad. The next morning she would pack it cold. So the day before go to your favorite restaurant buy some fried chicken and refrigerate it overnight. Cold fried chicken is a must for me in a picnic basket (don’t forget the hot sauce!).
