This wonderful wine is imported from Slovenia, just a few miles East of the border with Italy. The winemaker, Edi Simcic, has been called “perhaps the best winemaker in eastern Europe.” He’s the man behind the Giocato Pinot Grigio.

In the 1980’s I  traveled extensively through this area before the break-up of Yugoslavia. I tasted many fine wines that cost only 100 dinars, a few cents in U.S. currency. And it is still true today. If these grapes had been harvested just two miles to the west, this wine would cost 60% more.

Wine has been produced in this area since the time of the Celts and Illyrian tribes, long before the Romans brought wine to France, Spain and Italy. Most Slovenian wine is consumed domestically which is why most of us are just now being exposed to the fabulous wine of Slovenia

Edi Simcic’s fame will likely come, but for now, it’s a treat to enjoy a world-class wine at a very affordable price. More intense than you’d expect from this variety, it’s beautifully balanced and possesses a wide spectrum of aromas and flavors. The grapes are grown on an herbiside free 10 acre vineyard in Primorska. This wine definitely needs to be enjoyed with food. On the nose it offers loads of grapefruit, honeydew melon, lemon, a hint of minerality, and some coconut. The taste features minerality great acidity and some pear. It is definitely more complex than most Pinot Grigio’s. Just delicious.
