Getting the Heck Out of Florida: Escape to the North Georgia Mountains

I understand Florida is a wonderful beautiful state, hey, I was born there. But you’ve got to admit its hot, humid, flat and there are lots of mosquitoes. Also, the summers can be oppressive. No chilly nights – not much fall color and no Smokey bonfires.

So lets contemplate a change of scenery. Where would you like to go? Let’s envision a location with cool summer nights and warm but not hot sunny days. How about an area offering evening whiffs of wood-fire smoke and clear sky views of night stars. How about some place where there is an abundance of hiking, rafting, and dining. Guess what, our town of Clayton is only a 6 ½ hour drive from Tallassee, Jacksonville and Gainesville, Florida. It’s an adorable mountain town jammed with cute artisan galleries, gear shops, an ax throwing venue, outdoor cafés with farm to table dining and lounges with craft cocktails. We also have 4 nearby wineries and two award winning distilleries.

Southern Living Magazine names Beechwood Inn “One of the South’s Most Charming Inns 2019.” Wine Enthusiast Magazine places Beechwood Inn in the Top 5 Destinations “for your next wine and food-focused escape.” Travel writer Becky Lamb says, “Beechwood Inn is the closest thing to a Napa Valley Bed and Breakfast we have in Georgia.”  The restaurant was named one of the “Top 10 Farm to Table Restaurants in Georgia.”

“We can’t decide which we like better here-the Wine-Thirty evenings featuring Beechwood’s own varietals or the farm-to-table dinners held every Saturday. Rabun County is known for fresh organic eggs, crops from the field, and four local vineyards.

Escape to the North Georgia Mountains

Getting the Heck out of Florida and escaping to the North Georgia Mountains will be filled with so much fun and relaxation you may never want to go home. The best place for weekend getaways in North Georgia is the Historic Town of Clayton. We love our town and enjoy helping our guests find amazing activities while on their weekend getaway.

About 80% of Rabun County is comprised of publicly held land owned by the National Forest Service and Georgia Power Company, making it the best location in North Georgia to enjoy the outdoors. Stay in one of our cozy bed and breakfast rooms or one of our luxury mountain cabins — and simply relax. Beechwood Inn is surrounded on three sides by Georgia State Parks, so you won’t have to travel far from the property to enjoy the delights of the North Georgia Mountains.  You’ll find everything you could dream of for the perfect get away to rest, relax and renew. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, a student of history, a prolific shopper or collector, or a gourmand or a farmer at heart, you can find it here, beckoning you, and waiting to delight you.

Then, just out of town we have white water rafting, spectacular fishing, hiking, 27 waterfalls, mountain golf and lakes galore. The Appalachian and Bartram Trails traverse our county, not counting many local and state park trails, and did I mention we have three state parks in our county.

Our County of Rabun was designated by the state legislature as the “Farm to Table Capital of Georgia” recognizing our large number of local farms, orchards, dairies and vineyards. So pack up the family car with some light jackets, hiking boots and head to the North Georgia Mountains.

And guess what, if you do not want to hike, raft or gallop you can sit on Beechwood Inn’s large covered front porch, sip wine, partake of evening appetizers, and view stunning fall color on Black Rock Mountain. It’s a stunning view from the Inn’s porch.
