Best Weekend Getaway from Florida

Best Weekend Getaway from Florida

I know Florida is a wonderful beautiful state, hey, I was born there. But you’ve got to admit its hot, humid, flat and there are lots of mosquitoes. Also, there is not much of a fall. No chilly nights – not much fall color and no Smokey bonfires.

So lets contemplate a change of scenery. Where would you like to go? Let’s envision a location with chilly nights and cool sunny days. How about an area offering evening whiffs of woodfire smoke and clear sky views of night stars. How about some place where there is an abundance of fall color spilling down the hillsides and the crisp crunch of leaves on a mountain trail.

Guess what, our town of Clayton, Georgia is only a 6 ½ hour drive from Tallassee and Gainesville, Florida. It’s an adorable mountain town jammed with cute artisan galleries, gear shops, an axe throwing venue, outdoor and roof-top cafés with farm to table dining and lounges with craft cocktails. We also have 4 nearby wineries and two award winning distilleries.

Then, just out of town we have white water rafting, fishing, hiking, 27 waterfalls, mountain golf and lakes galore. The Appalachian and Bartram Trails traverse our county, not counting many local and state park trails, and did I mention we have three state parks in our county.

Our County of Rabun was designated by the state legislature as the “Farm to Table Capital of Georgia” recognizing our large number of local farms, orchards, dairies and vineyards. So pack up the family car with some light jackets, hiking boots and your Platinum American Express and head to the North Georgia Mountains.

But you better make reservations for lodging or a camping space as you don’t want to be homeless upon arrival. Where to go? How about an adorable AWARD WINNING bed and breakfast inn. That’s Beechwood Inn located in the town of Clayton, Georgia. Named by Southern Living Magazine “One of the South’s Most Charming Inns 2019.” https://www.southernliving.com/travel/souths-charming-inns Wine Enthusiast Magazine places Beechwood Inn in the Top 5 Destinations “for your next wine and food-focused escape.” Travel writer Becky Lamb says, “Beechwood Inn is the closest thing to a Napa Valley Bed and Breakfast we have in Georgia.”  The restaurant was named one of the “Top 10 Farm to Table Restaurants in Georgia.”

And guess what, if you do not want to hike, raft or gallop you can sit on Beechwood Inn’s large covered front porch, sip wine, partake of evening appetizers, and view stunning fall color on Blackrock Mountain. It’s a stunning view from the Inn’s porch. https://beechwoodinn.ws/
